Integrated literacy training and development for staff

A workplace basic education programme includes literacy and numeracy and can incorporate a variety of subjects ranging from communication skills, computer skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving and report writing. The course is designed and delivered in a flexible and adaptable way to meet the needs of the participants and employers. Workers participate on a voluntary basis and total confidentiality applies to all.
The course takes place either on or off site. Ideally workers should attend the course on paid work time, however the issue of release will depend on each company’s situation and may consist of a blend of employer and employee time. The course length will vary depending on the particular programme, taster programmes can start from about 30- 50 hours.
The courses are usually, but not exclusively, delivered by the local VEC Adult Literacy Service.
Depending on the type of workplace, funding for the training may be sought through the FÁS Skills for Work initiative.
