‘Integrating literacy’ learning and teaching materials

NALA has published integrating literacy resource packs, guidelines and materials to support tutors and learners in integrated delivery of vocational programmes:

  • Integrating Literacy: Guidelines for further education and training centres
  • Skillwords: a resource pack of materials designed by participants on the NUIM Certificate Course in Integrating Literacy. The materials focus on helping learners understand, read and write the key words associated with selected topics in their vocational area.
  • Missling the Tobar: a resource pack containing 4 reading books and an accompanying workbook. The books were written by members of the Travelling Community who are participants on vocational education and training programmes. The accompanying workbook contains learner materials and suggestions for integrated teaching and learning activities based on each of the books.
  • Move with Literacy: a set of materials and suggested teaching and learning activities based on a range of sports.

ALA has also produced literacy guidelines and support materials that are specifically tailored to particular education and training programmes, and developed in partnership with the relevant organisations. These include facilitator guidelines and sample materials for the Copping On programme (Youthreach) and the Quit Smoking programme (Health Service Executive), a number of FAS programmes and services, and Skillnets.

At the request of Skillnets, NALA produced Guidelines for vocational and workplace trainers. These are intended for trainers who design and deliver very short, ‘once-off’ courses in the workplace. The focus of these guidelines is on facilitating the course in a way that is effective for all participants, including those who are not comfortable with reading and writing. They are a supplement to the ‘Integrating Literacy Guidelines’ and are best read in that context.
