Research

Since the late 1980s we have been involved in research into adult literacy and related areas. Our research findings have been invaluable in helping us to:
- develop existing good practice in adult literacy both in Ireland and abroad.
- pioneer good practice
- provide practical and agreed solutions to adult literacy issues
- inform policy proposals and advice to organisations.
We have years of experience of conducting and managing research projects. We have a researcher who manages our research strategy and priorities. We also work closely with research consortiums, agencies and most recently have commissioned post graduate research into numeracy in the workplace.
Our latest research
- 'Learning through Life' - a study of older people with literacy difficulties who do not engage with adult literacy services
- 'Men and literacy' - a study of men with literacy difficulties.
- Research on Family Literacy - a study to identify where, how and why learning takes place in the home.
- Living literacy : a whole organisation approach to integrating literacy in a vocational training setting.
- WoLLNET Project - an EU project to develop a toolkit for employers can adapt and use to measure the impact of basic education and training on the workforce.
Research on policy areas:
- A review of Irish adult literacy policy
- A cost benefit analysis of adult literacy training in Ireland.
Forthcoming research
In 2010 we will be:
- Developing strategies to reduce known barriers to engaging in literacy.
- conducting research into new approaches to adult and family literacy and numeracy teaching and learning.
