Policy development

Our policy work aims to influence Government policy and lobby for appropriate actions and funds to improve literacy and numerably levels in Ireland.

To develop adult literacy policy we:

  • use the latest research evidence to build arguments to convince key politicians and policy makers of the need for appropriate policies and resources for adult literacy.
  • attend high level policy roundtables.
  • organise policy conferences.
  • provide policy briefing papers.

While raising literacy levels is now a priority for Government, economy and society, what is needed is a clear view on how this can be achieved. As a result, our current lobbying efforts focus on seeking an update on Government's national adult literacy strategy from 2000, as set out in it's national policy document, The White Paper on Adult Education Learning for Life. A clear and updated adult literacy strategy will help effectively tackle the intolerably low literacy and numeracy levels in Irish society.
