Integrating literacy into further education and vocational training

NALA’s work on ‘integrating literacy’ is about encouraging all education and training providers to use systems and procedures that take account of literacy issues. The aim is to ensure that no-one is excluded from education and training programmes on the basis of literacy issues alone and that everyone can take part in education and training that suits their interests, talents and goals.

What does it mean?

‘Integrating literacy’ means designing and delivering education and training programmes – in every subject and skill - in a way that develops the course-related language, literacy and numeracy as part of the core subject. It requires education and training providers to take a whole-organisation approach to literacy, so that learners experience inclusive, literacy-friendly practices from recruitment through to progression.

How do you integrate literacy?

For teachers and trainers, integrating literacy means teaching their own course in an inclusive, literacy-aware way. Teachers and trainers will plan and use methods that reduce unnecessary literacy barriers to learning the core content, and that help learners deal effectively with the necessary course-related and job-related literacy practices. If the course is employment-related they will identify the literacy practices involved in the real-life job role.

Integrating literacy is most effective when it is understood and adopted by the whole organisation which requires a policy and strategy that is driven by senior management. Read more...
